For a car to live up to the legendary name of Godzilla, it must be a mighty automobile.. And so the Nissan GT-R is. It is Japan’s mightiest muscle car, an all-wheel drive, turbocharged monster worthy of bearing the name of a mythical monster that terrorized Japan around 30 times (and New York at least once.) And it’s a relative bargain with a starting at around $80,000. So can it beat a station wagon?
That’s what Hennessey Performance Engineering set about finding out as they lined up their V650 CTS-V Sport Wagon against a stock, 485 horsepower Nissan GT-R. Guess who won?
Well lets just say we wouldn’t be posting this if the Nissan won. From GM’s cradle the CTS-V Wagon makes a tire-shredding 556 horsepower from its supercharged LSA engine. Then it goes to Hennessey’s performance school where it picks up another 100 horsepower with some basic bolt-in upgrades and tuning. A cold air intake, supercharger pulley and upgrade, some exhaust and tuning improvements and bam, 100 extra horsepower bringing the total into the area 650 horsepower.
The price of the wagon, as tested, came out to $79,580, while the GT-R’s price tag topped $81,200. The Nissan is stock, though we’re wondering how big of a difference the CTS-V’s drag radials made. All the same, the big, heavy wagon made it down the track in 11.7 seconds at 122 mph, while the GT-R only managed an 11.8 at 210 mph. The mighty Godzilla taken down by a grocery getter? Say it ain’t so! Then again, we’ve already seen this same wagon take a turbocharged Porsche 997 down a notch. Who wants to step up next?
