There is always a good guy and a bad guy in every great story. For domestic car owners, especially performance enthusiasts, those who would choose an imported car over something made here in the USA are the bad guys. We’re pretty sure the import guys feel the same way about us (though they’re definitely wrong, right?) Yet even these two diverse groups can often find common ground when it comes to cool project cars.
MotoIQ’s RX-7/V8 engine swap project is just such a vehicle. Combining the smooth looks of the FD RX-7 with the raw horsepower of GM’s 50-state street legal E-ROD V8 engine, MotoIQ hopes to build 400+ smog-legal horsepower on a (soon-to-be) classic frame.
The project is well underway, and it is worth noting that GM does not provide the front accessories to the E-ROD engine, as there are several different options for the front belt drive system. Their most recent project update had to do with putting on the front accessory drive system, and they opted to install the drive system from a Cadillac CTS.
The E-ROD LS3 actually wasn’t their first choice of engines. You see, MotoIQ is made up mostly of import car fans, which is why we domestic guys find this project (dubbed “Most Badass”) so interesting. It seems that the dividing lines are crumbling, as both import and domestic car fans find something to like. After all, one can’t deny the technological prowess of the E-ROD LS3. Nor can we deny that the late-model RX-7’s are among the most gorgeous cars ever built, with near perfect weight balance and exceptional handling. We’ll be sure to check back in on this project as it goes forward.
