On any given day, “Just Rolled Into The Shop” on Reddit is a mixed bag of horror, consisting mostly of brake rotors worn down to the vanes, tires in various states of shreddage, and chocolate milkshakes served in a valve cover. Occasionally, something different gets thrown in the mix, and today, that something is Redditor wut_r_u_doin‘s tale of a 5th Gen Camaro on 28-inch wheels that rolled into his place of employment for an alignment.
He says, “When this thing first came to my shop it had 26,000 miles on it and still had a temp tag. They had to chop out huge sections of the fenders (both front and rear) to be able to clear these rims.”
Of course, to actually achieve the lift, some suspension modification was required. “In the rear they re-drilled the coilover shock mounting holes in the lower control arm,” he continues, “but in the front they welded on these brackets to elongate the strut and give them the clearance they needed.”
One look at the photo should give anyone who knows which end of the wrench to grab the willies. The goober welds are just the beginning – we don’t have to tell you just how bad an idea it is to hit a strut filled with oil and pressurized gas with a welder. Who would risk that? As one reply puts it, “Some guy in a hurry to sell a set of $15K wheels.”
The original poster adds, “I hope they never need to replace the struts. And yes, I was able to get the alignment done perfectly on this thing, surprisingly enough. I have had a second Camaro with a similar lift on it come in that was done even crappier, but I don’t have pictures of it.”
Whether or not you like donked-out cars is nobody’s business but your own, but regardless of your taste in car modifications, there’s no excuse for shoddy, dangerous work.
