At about this time last year, Toyota was still dealing with the fallout from hundreds of thousands of concerned Prius drivers terrified of “unintended acceleration.” Indeed, it seemed like every Toyota in the country was suddenly accelerating out of control, over walls and into buildings and, in one case, getting stuck on a California highway for many miles before the CHP managed to slow him down with their own cars.
Apparently this 4th-generation Chevy Camaro Z28 was jealous of all the attention the Prius demanded, as the Connecticut Post reports that it struck a Westport building after the driver claimed the gas pedal got stuck.
Proving the power of American muscle cars versus the 134 horsepower Prius, this Camaro Z28 inflicted some very serious damage on the brick-and-mortar Design Upholstery Custom Furniture shop in Westport, Connecticut. The bricks are cracked and the front end of the Camaro is completely smashed in. The driver, whose name and age were not released by police, claims that the gas pedal got stuck, causing her to unintentionally accelerate into the side of this building.
Now we’ve got a number of reasons to be suspicious of the driver’s story, chief among them being that in the decade since the last 4th-generation Camaro was made, there have been no known reports of the gas pedal sticking that we could find. Secondly, the whole Toyota unintended acceleration fiasco was discovered to be in almost every case caused by driver error, i.e. hitting the gas pedal as opposed to the brake. Finally, Westport is a wealthy retirement community along the Connecticut coastline, which in all likelihood means that the driver of this muscle car was probably an older lady who simply confused one pedal for the other (as elderly drivers often do). Not wanting to admit fault, she blamed the car, hoping to catch the tailwind of all that Toyota drama.
We feel worse for the car than the driver though. How about you?
