Chances are that most car guys had never heard of a Camaro ZL1 before GM unveiled its super muscle car last year. Though it is a name that has its roots in the muscle car wars of the 1960’s, the Camaro ZL1 remains a mystery to most people. For those in the know though, the ZL1 is the top-of-the-line Camaro, a 580 horsepower, Nurburgring-tuned beast ready to gobble up the competition.
In a yet-to-air-on-television commercial, GM asks “What makes a Camaro ZL1?” To answer, they rounded up the engineers who had a part in the project.
For the uninitiated, the Camaro ZL1 is the ultimate track Camaro, sporting a supercharged 6.2 liter V8 cranking out a pavement-pounding 580 horsepower. Beyond that, it has an incredible aerodynamics package, a suspension tuned on the famous “Green Hell,” and a (relatively) affordable price tag that undercuts supercar competition from the likes of Porsche and Ferrari.
The first half of the commercial is all “very technical” stuff about the magnetic ride suspension, six-piston brakes, and all that good stuff. But then the commercial reaches its peak. It’s all very technical… until you bury your right foot. We think that’s all you need to know about the Camaro ZL1. Anyway, enjoy the commercial; it’s a good one.
