As we learned at last November’s SEMA Show in Las Vegas, Chevrolet’s venerable COPO Camaro program is set to continue in 2014, with a third run of 69 of the limited-edition, factory-built and prepared race cars based on the fifth-generation Camaro, with production slated to take place around the middle of the year, as has occurred with the two previous iterations of the COPO.
Exact details of the sleek race car, which was first unveiled in front of the international audience at SEMA and later displayed at the PRI Show in Indianapolis, are still not known, although GM officials have cited the inclusion of numerous engine choices — a naturally-aspirated 427, a 350 cubic inch mill with a 2.9L Whipple supercharger, and naturally-aspirated versions of the 350 and 396.
One item on the specification sheet for the new COPO that we do know, however, is that Weld Racing will be the official supplier of the front and rear wheels on the new COPO. Weld Racing confirmed recently that their forged wheel, which was shown on the concept vehicle at SEMA, will come as standard equipment on the 69 models built this year. The wheels, of which full-scale production began back in March, are direct descendants of the revolutionary new Delta-1 drag racing wheels that Weld Racing developed and released for the Top Fuel Dragsters and Funny Cars, Pro Stockers, and Pro Modified cars, two years ago.
The new wheel gives the 2014 COPO a distinct new look that sets it apart from the 2012 and 2013 models that preceded it.
