Well, this is going to be interesting. Some tweeting action last night between the folks at Jalopnik [2] and GM’s Joel Ewanick, the new Chief Marketing Officer there, has got the web site soliciting comments in favor of bringing back the El Camino. Yeah, this is not the first time the topic has come up, but with a high level GM executive involved, it could be different.

[3]While Ewanick really didn’t make any solid commitments, he certainly did leave the door open for commentary. If 100,000 comments is what it takes, then anyone foaming a the mouth for the return of a car-based pickup truck needs to head on over there and add their vote.

One one hand, the guy that started in all seems to think the comment by Ewanick was nothing more than a flippant reply to another tweet, but he also thinks he can back GM into a corner if enough people say “Yes, I want one.” Check out the post [4] and see what you think.

For those of you wondering what all the fuss is about, Chevrolet’s El Camino was an on-again, off-again model that first broke cover in the late 1950’s. Revised several times until its demise in 1987, some of the more cherished versions are those based on the Chevelle SS. Such El Caminos offered muscle car performance with the ability to haul up to 1,700 pounds in the pickup bed.

A similar vehicle is produced by Holden, GM’s Australian division and has often been a source of speculation on the topic of its being imported into North America.
