For those outside of California, it may seem like the state as whole is a peace-loving hippie collective that drives hybrid vehicles, and that law enforcement may share those sentiments, but in reality the Highway Patrol Officers are very highly trained when it comes to pursuing the bad guys. Have fun out running a fourth-generation Camaro that is capable of 160MPH with a well-trained driver behind the wheel.
The California Highway Patrol EVOC (Emergency Vehicle Operations Course) is recognized as an elite training program. A 2.3-mile road course complete with skid recovery areas is used to teach defensive driving, high performance driving and the infamous PIT maneuver.
During a 2007 demonstration of skills by training officers, the instructors decide to have a little fun and put on a quite a show for the crowd. During the display the officers cut loose and drift the Camaros around the track, creating a nice sideways tire-smoking spectacle. Once the drift display is complete, the training officers display their defensive driving skills, complete with more tire smoking shenanigans. As they approach the end of the demonstration the tire destruction continues with some serious burnouts that would make both John Force and Tony Stewart very proud. This is one of the reasons why watching car chases in Southern California is so much fun.
