Video: LS1 Swapped Toyota Cressida – Greatest Sleeper of All Time?

During our daily troll of YouTube, looking for the latest and greatest videos for the LSX faithful, we stumbled across what we believe could possibly be the best LS swapped sleeper on Earth. It’s a bold claim, but we are willing defend it.

On the surface this 1990 Toyota Cressida looks like any other disposable 4-door Japanese car from the early 1990’s. Its boxy shape, sun faded paint, and crusty plastic hubcaps might lead you to believe that this car is nothing more than some broke college kid’s main mode of transportation. But appearances can be deceiving. Just looking at this sinfully ugly Cressida you would never think that has had modified LS1 planted between its fenders, and if it could ever manage to get those tiny 15-inch performance radials to hook up, it might just spank your 4th Gen.

The mad scientist behind this build is Al Jones, from Liberty Hill, Texas. Jones tells us that he bought this car two months ago for $700 with the single minded purpose of swapping in an LS and keeping it an unassuming sleeper. Jones says, “I had been looking for a ‘Sleeperish’ RWD car put an LS1 in for some time, and this car fit the bill perfectly.”

Because the Cressida is already rear-wheel-drive (It shares many components with the early Supras, in fact) the LS1 swap was actually pretty simple. Jones says, “Believe or not I didn’t have to cut up the car at all to fit the engine and trans; I only had to modify the transmission tunnel a little bit to accept the 4L60E bell housing. The motor and tranny mounts are custom. I just took and modified some LS1/SBC motor mount plates, and welded them to the bottom of the OEM motor mounts from Toyota with some tubing. I also modified the Toyota tranny mount with some tubing to get it to work. All in all, it was a really simple swap. I am still amazed at how nice everything fit together.”

Now, we realize that this isn’t the first time that an LS engine has been swapped into one of these turds, but this is a shining example of the sleeper qualities the Cressida possesses. In fact, we dare you to find a real life example of a better LS swapped sleeper.

Jones was kind enough to share his entire parts list with us, just in case there is anyone else out there crazy enough to actually undertake a Cressida swap.

  • 04′ Pontiac GTO oil pan (didn’t have to modify the crossmember)
  • Nissan 240SX LS1 swap aluminum radiator
  • Sikky Headers for a 240SX LS1 swap (I had to modify them to fit)
  • LS1 wiring harness
  • Walbro 255L fuel pump
  • Custom exhaust that utilizes the Toyota stock resonator and muffler (added an electric cutout). Dual to a single exhaust to keep it sounding and looking stock in appearance.
  • Custom single driveshaft (The Cressida originally had a 2 piece driveshaft)
  • Custom Speedhut GPS speedometer (I used this as a cheap solution to the tranny being electronic and the Toyota speedo being mechanical)
  • Stock Rear End, 8.8″ with 3.90 gears (From what I hear the rear end is as bullet proof as the Ford 9-inch)
  • Currently using stock suspension (There is only 60 pound difference in weight of stock engine to the LS1)
  • Z06 cam and valve spring upgrade
  • 4L60E trans (heavy duty sun gear, Corvette servo, Corvette converter , Stage 2 shift kit and upgraded clutch packs)

Jones says that his future plans for the Cressida include a mild tune, a minor suspension upgrade, and maybe a rear end upgrade. Then, he says, “It’s off to the strip to break some hearts.” Stay tuned for more, LSX fans…
