The original El Camino was not much of a utility vehicle to begin with, though creative owners found all sorts of uses for the open truck bed. Still, we would prefer to have a straight-up pickup any day of the week if there is actual manual labor to do. Down in Australia though, they don’t have the same options where it comes to pickup trucks that we here in America do. Then again, they also have access to modern-day Utes, spiritual successors to the El Camino and its ilk.
Jalopnik came across this video of a high-performance HSV Maloo getting down and dirty in some mud, proving that performance Utes aren’t cut out for off-roading. That doesn’t mean they aren’t fun though.
This video comes from somewhere Down Under, on what looks to be a farm or ranch of some sort. Now the resident of this place almost certainly has a real truck to do the real work, but he is also lucky enough to have an HSV Maloo, which is a performance version of the standard Holden Ute. Back in 2006 the HSV Maloo also set the record for the world’s fastest production pickup, beating out even the Dodge Ram SRT-10 with a top speed of 168 MPH.
The Maloo in this video isn’t setting any speed records. Instead it is just getting sideways in the mud and making a general mess of things. For a performance pickup, it actually didn’t do half bad in the mud. Makes us want one all the more…
