Summer may be drawing to a close, but that doesn’t mean that it’s too late to have some convertible fun. Drive Time drops the top and rolls out in a decked-out Camaro SS/RS convertible in this recent video review they posted to YouTube.
While you can even get a base model LT Camaro convertible, Drive Time got their hands on a 2SS convertible loaded with extras, and drove it for an entire week to get a good feel for the car. They report, as do most other reviewers, that the Camaro’s interior is a little short on quality. However, when it comes to the engine they say, again as most others do, that these cars have good power on tap ready and waiting for the driver whenever they want it. After the end of their week-long test, they calculated that the convertible SS managed 16.7 miles per gallon during mixed driving, which is right at the EPA estimate.
The biggest contention here is that all of the added bracing and power top mechanisms on the convertible add 267 pounds to the car, bringing the convertible Camaro models in at a portly 4116 pounds. Drive Time says that the SS Convertible is still fast, but it doesn’t offer the same acceleration as SS Coupe models. They tell us, “Don’t get me wrong. It’s still fast – as fast as the convertible buyer will ever need.”
To add a bit of insult to injury, they also report that the Chrysler SRT convertibles with the new 392 Hemi they recently tested seem to preform significantly better than the Camaro SS convertible.
