Video: Bespoke Supercharged LS Track Toy Climbs Mt. Alma

Hillclimb events are one of the oldest forms of motorsports, and the tradition continues today around the globe. Anywhere there’s a twisty road that can be closed off for a day or two is a potential race track, and the one-at-a-time format helps keep the potential for wrecks to a minimum. As a result, events like the Mt. Alma Mile Hillclimb, which celebrated its 7th running just last weekend, attract a wide variety of participants in everything from hot hatches to exotics and full-on race cars.

There's not much to an Ultra, stripped of bodywork and drivetrain.

There’s not much to an Ultra, stripped of bodywork and drivetrain.

In this video, we get to ride along with the driver of a Ultra Race Car as he takes on the South Australian road course. The Ultra was designed as a purpose built track day car with safety as the primary design goal. Though you can’t see it in the video, the bodywork is pretty striking, too. Available as a kit or roller, Mad Performance can also set you up with a ready-to-run Ultra powered by either an SR20 turbo four cylinder Nissan engine, or an LS1/LS2.

This particular car, however, has an LS (of unknown specification, unfortunately) with a twin-rotor supercharger strapped to it poking out through the bonnet, making for a very fast ride up the hill. Light weight combined with steamroller tires are the perfect setup to get the most out of all that horsepower. The ride-along, shot from multiple angles, almost seems like it’s sped up because of the speed this roller skate carries through the course.

The SR20-powered version of the Ultra is striking, but we prefer more power...
