Is there anything quite as sweet as the song played by a turbocharged V8 engine? We would argue no, because it is in fact one of the best sounds known to any man (or woman) who has any appreciation of automobiles whatsoever. So it is that we find ourselves often lured by the siren song of these high-horsepower, high power projects, most often while they get tuned and tweaked on the dyno.

Today we bring you a truly rare bird, an unloved and oft-forgotten participant in the muscle car wars. The 1972 Chevy Nova was just a couple of years late to the displacement party, but 40 years later this oft unrecognized classic has had a sweet, turbocharged LSx V8 installed under the hood. The result? Why nothing less than the sweet notes of 1,000 horsepower turbocharged, small-block V8 singing its song.

Just listening to this monster Nova revving up, knowing it is about to unleash 1,000 horses of unbridled fury onto the unsuspecting dyno. Wait for it, wait for it…and there it is, the brief but beautiful flash of power. The turbo emptying the room of air and feeding it to the hungry small block below. Ahh, tis a sweet, sweet sound.

That motor, by the way, is fed a steady diet of E85 ethanol, and the turbo is running only at 17 lbs of boost. The resulting power is 1,017 horsepower and 1,019 ft-lbs of torque…at the wheels. This Nova don’t just sing; she can dance too.

What we are sure of is this; we’re going to watch that video at least one more time.
