Trans Am Turned Station Wagon is One Unique Sports Hauler

In the last decade, we’ve seen many a beloved sports car converted to more roomy station wagons straight from the factory. For those of you scratching your heads, we’re talking about vehicles like the Dodge Magnum (which, although it came first, has eerily shared design cues with the four-door Charger) and the CTS-V Wagon. But due to certain companies going under before a wagon could be conjured up, vehicles like the Pontiac Firebird never saw their day of joining the wagon market. That is until the aftermarket got a hold of it and companies like Automotive Services in Sterling Heights, Michigan, produced concept creations along the lines of the Hurst Hauler.

While we saw this unique vehicle again through our friends at Autoblog, it seems that the Hurst Hauler has truly made its rounds in the market.

After debuting at the 2000 SEMA Show, the car went on to be a support vehicle on the 2001 Hot Rod Power Tour, driven by the guys from Year One.

Equipped with a custom built Kammback rear hatch and halo bar by Custom Design, Ltd. of Trevor, Wisconsin, the converted 2000 WS6 Trans Am not only looks different from the outside, with a boxed in back end, but also provides quite a bit more space than your traditional TA. And those of you who’ve ever taken a peek into the back hatch of a factory Firebird know just how much space back there could be improved. Odd looking for sure, we’ve got to say that the Hurst Hauler is certainly one unique sports wagon. Adding to the vehicle’s demanding looks is a custom Standox Candy Apple and Orange paint mix.

Miss Hurst, Ms. Linda Vaughn herself, even posed with the Hurst Hauler back in the day.

But beyond the car’s new looks and added cargo space is a bit more oomph, compliments of work by Westech Automotive, out of Silver Lake, Wisconsin. The mean-for-its day 5.7L LS1 engine was equipped with new valve springs and a custom camshaft from Erson Cams, CNC’d cylinder heads, new spark plugs, air filter, wires and fuel injectors from Accel, and finally a Corsa Performance exhaust system. Topping it off is a special TTS Power Systems calibration module which allows all the added components to work gloriously together to the tune of 370hp.

Adding to the wagon’s performance features are Mr. Gasket and Eibach springs that anchor the car lower to the ground, Lakewood rear control arms and panhard bar, and Baer racing brakes. Directing demands from the Hurst shifter with special Line-Loc switch to the pavement is a four-speed automatic transmission, which sends every bit of potential power to the car’s 18×10-inch American Racing Torque Thrust II wheels wrapped in BF Goodrich g-Force 295/35/ZR18 rubber.

The Hurst Hauler is certainly a unique concept vehicle and would definitely find sanctuary among an eclectic car collection. According to Autoblog, the wagon was recently available on eBay for $35,000. Unfortunately, the listing has since been taken down with no word on if someone bought this unique F-body or not.
