Immortalized in 2000 pounds of vanilla pound cake, buttercream frosting, rice crispy treats and some non-edible additions, the Bumblebee Camaro awed bystanders as it was unloaded from the Carlo’s Bake Shop truck. According to Jalopnik and the New York Times, the familiar image of the half-Camaro, half-robot-in-disguise was delivered to the GM display at the Javits Center in New York on Wednesday. Due to the affiliation between TLC and Carlo’s Bake Shop, the delivery of the Camaro cake was filmed for the network’s show titled Cake Boss. Just another case of merging marketing strategies (GM, TLC, Carlo’s and the Transformers franchise) in order to help promote each entity and create hype for the latest Transformer’s film, Dark of the Moon.
Regardless of the current love-hate relationship with reality television, the crew on Cake Boss has some talent. Taking the time to create something that weighs half as much as the real Camaro from flour and fondant, while still being recognizable takes a lot of work. The “engineers” involved with this creation took the time to add realistic touches like halo-style headlights complete with actual LED lighting; although many of the elements in these cakes are in fact edible, it is probably not advisable to consume LED lights due to digestion issues and the crunchy bits tend to get stuck between one’s teeth.
