The great thing about being involved in the automotive hobby is that there are, and always will be, an infinite number of engine and car combinations. After all, there is always some new engine coming out, and there is no end to new cars. In fact some swaps, like dropping an LS-series engine into the body of a Fox Mustang from the 1980’s and early 90’s, are quite frequent. Yet even for such a “common” swap, somehow these cars still take our breath away.
In particular, this twin-turbo, LS7-powered 1986 Mustang coupe, found by Autoholics on the Corvetteforums, is both delicately beautiful, and horrendously powerful. And we freakin’ love it.
As you can tell from the pictures on the build thread, this Mustang started life as a humble 6-cylinder couple, ugly and unloved. But soon enough the anemic engine was tossed in place of a built LSx motor punched out to 440 cubic inches. With highly upgraded internals, a turbo camshaft along with a LXR intake and Turbo Race cylinder heads from Mast Motorsports helped put the finishing touches on this monster motor. That, and the twin 71mm turbochargers. That’s a lotta boost. This combination should be good for somewhere in the 750 horsepower range at low PSI, and up to 1,300 horsepower if he cranks the boost up to 20 pounds or so. Oh, there will probably be nitrous injected into this engine at some point too because hey, why not?
But what good is all that horsepower if your car looks like crap? It is no secret that the “four-eyed” Mustangs are the less-desirable of the Fox-body styles, so our builder is going ahead with the “aero” front clip swap. Add a clean white paintjob, some nice black rims, and what we have here is a Chevy/Ford monster machine that looks great and will run like stink… when it is finished. It’s the perfect combination of Blue Oval and Bowtie if you ask us, but instead, we’re asking you. What do you think of this “hybrid?”
