The classic COPOs were undeniably some of the coolest Camaros ever assembled, and although they weren’t “factory” cars, they have still played a large role in Camaro, drag racing and general automotive history. With that sort of reputation, it’s no wonder that Chevrolet decided to bring back the COPO in an extremely short-run to once again make a name for itself on the drag strip. And with the new fifth-gen cars doing very well as throw-backs to the first-gen Camaros, there is no better time for these potent track machines to emerge than now.
Back in March, Chevrolet officially announced their intentions to produce 69 COPO Camaro drag cars, and April brought the release of the official specifications sheet for them, bringing the reality of a modern COPO even closer.
Now, thanks to Chevrolet’s new social media site The Block, we are getting a first look at some COPO assembly going on just in time for their late summer drag strip debut.
Previously, we had only seen the COPO in the Summit White paint scheme, but it will also be available in other colors. As you can see from the pictures, you can get a COPO in Black, Victory Red, Silver Ice Metallic and even Ashen Gray Metallic. The newly released pictures also reveal roll cage, engine and suspension assembly currently taking place. We can’t wait to see the modern COPOs take on the drag strip later this year and these new photos show that that time is coming sooner than later.
