‘Murica: Don’t Let The EPA Take Away Our Race Cars With Legislation

SEMASANheaderRecently we brought you extended, inside information about the proposal from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). And while on the surface some sources considered it a harmless re-wording to update an existing regulation, we spoke to SEMA attorneys and got to the bottom of it. We are fortunate that we, as enthusiasts, have the SEMA Action Network (SAN) to invest man hours into these regulations to make sure they don’t hurt – or decimate – our hobby.

Many sources sprang into action with a White House petition, and within a day there was more than 100,000 signatures collected, demanding the EPA cancel its proposal to make street cars that are converted to race-only vehicles illegal. Well, Congress has heard us, and now it’s time for Congress to take some action and support us.

SAN has shared this new information with us regarding Recognizing the Protection of Motorsports Act of 2016 (RPM Act) and it is backed by U.S. Representatives Patrick McHenry (R-NC), Henry Cuellar (D-TX), Richard Hudson (R-NC), Bill Posey (R-FL), and Lee Zeldin (R-NY). So what does RPM do for us in the automotive world?

SANdaFor starters, the RPM Act (H.R. 4715) makes it clear that Congress intends to exclude competition-only vehicles from the scope of the Clean Air Act, including converted street vehicles. And just what can you do to help? SAN has made it simple for you, and all it takes is about a minute of your time to help drive this point home.

You can head to SAN and fill out a form that will allow them to generate a letter directly to our members of Congress. All that is required of you is your name, address, and a valid email and you can be a part of one of the most significant issues that could affect not only us gearheads, but the automotive aftermarket as a whole.

We urge you to participate, and are grateful for our friends at SEMA who never take issues that pose a potential threat to our hobby lightly. They don’t… and neither should we, so lets show Congress that we won’t let the EPA take away our race cars.
