There’s no denying how popular the 2011 Chevrolet Camaro is, who once again leads the sales numbers in May against its rivals. According to Torque News, Through the first five months of 2011, GM have sold over 40,000 Camaros, up 3.7% from this time last year. In April they unloaded over 10,000! The Mustang, Challenger, and 370Z all have been battling for second throughout 2011.
May’s sales numbers that were released yesterday did see a decline in the overall Camaro sales. In April Chevrolet saw 10,852 Camaros pull off the showroom floor, but for May they saw a dip to 9,451 Camaros sold. A lot of blogs and Chevrolet naysayers are quick to point out that that is a loss of almost 13%. But when compared to May of 2010, it is an increase of 5.8%.
Ford saw its popular Mustang sell 6,607 times in May. Which was good enough for second behind the Camaro, but what you don’t normally hear is how that is a 36% decline from this same time last year. Ford as a company saw an decrease in sales of only .1%, but the Mustang was the only non-suv or truck for Ford that saw a loss over 15% when compared to 2010.
Coming in third was the Dodge Challenger which accounted 3,418 units sold in May, which was a small decline when compared to last month and the previous year’s May. Most car experts say the lack of sales is the Challenger is generally more expensive and doesn’t have a convertible option like the Camaro and Mustang.
Finally only selling 847 units was the Nissan 370Z who saw a decline of more than 100 units from last month.
