What is it about gearheads who street race, potentially putting themselves and others in harm’s way? Despite the fact that it’s no secret that many dragstrips have closed over the years, there are still plenty of them around to use as a need for speed outlet.
Unfortunately, many drag racers still insist that racing on the street is the thing to do. We’re not sure if it’s the rush, the excitement, or the risk of getting caught that makes it so enticing. Risking yourself and your car is one thing. Risking somebody else’s life and vehicle is something else entirely.
We just got a report from FOX News of three individuals who were arrested last Saturday night, along with many more who had their vehicles impounded for partaking in illegal street racing – through a a residential neighborhood! Talk about stupid.
Detroit Police Department in conjunction with the Mayor’s Office is permanently confiscating cars that are involved in illegal street racing, whether they were actually caught racing or not. According to reports, it doesn’t matter if there’s a loan on these vehicles or not.
Once you’re caught racing, they become property of the Detroit Police Department – for good! Attached to this article is the actual news report courtesy of FOX News, and in the video are just a few of the cars that have been confiscated.
We see a fourth- and fifth-gen Camaro SS, an SN95 Mustang, an LS1 WS6, and last but not least, an ’87 Buick Grand National. None of which will be returned to their owners. The only saving grace to this is the fact that unlike Los Angeles or San Diego who are known for crushing cars, these will either be auctioned off or used as undercover cars for police officers.
