You know how most test mules are wrapped in dazzle camo or black tarp to ward off the general public? That was hardly the sort of mentality floating around Mallett Motorsports when they built “Green Slime,” a 1997 C5 that holds a high place of distinction with the custom car builders.

That distinction derives from the fact that this was the first C5 that the Mallet brothers ever worked on. Over the course of five years the Corvette saw different body designs aimed at making the car more race-worthy, while under the hood lay all kinds of modifications.

In its current state, the C5 packs a supercharged, 435 cubic inch, 608 horsepower mill that’s sure to please any fan of fast motor vehicles. Did someone say 200+ mile-per-hour performance? This will likely be a major facet to mention on this car as it heads to the Chicago Mecum auction on October 9-11, 2014.

Elsewhere, capable handling is facilitated by way of Mallet-Penske coilover suspension, as well as Alcon 13.5-inch slotted disc brakes using 6-piston front and 4-piston rear calipers and PFC pads. Provided the tires are still good, this Vette seems quite irresistible as a driving experience.

It’s completely safe for street use, according to Chuck Mallett, one of the Mallett brothers that oversaw the Corvette’s evolution. And you can bet it’s been a reliable beast, having once completed a One Lap Of America event and several Car and Driver shootout events.
