Muscle car fans rejoice! GM has finally announced the return of the legendary COPO program specifically for 2010 and 2011 Camaros. COPO cars dominated on the street and strip in the late 60’s and early 70’s by bringing together the best speed parts GM had to offer into one purpose built lightweight platform (most notably the original ZL1 ’69 Camaro 427). These cars represented no-nonsense simplicity in every way – built to go fast, and never make any excuses.
Now more than four decades after the original COPO Camaros rolled out of the factories, you can build your own official COPO 2010 or 2011 Camaro with parts from the new line of GM Performance Parts. The first offerings listed on the website, the LS7 427 block and heads, are unmistakably meant to pay tribute to the original COPO’s while looking ahead to the future of GM Performance. While the line is small for now, and the body-in-white is the closest thing you can get to a stripped down COPO track monster, the truly exciting part is the possibilities of what could be released under the COPO name. Perhaps GM is working towards eventually making the COPO program the same way it was in the 60’s; where all you needed to do was check a few boxes on the order sheet and your new Camaro would be delivered from the factory with no frills, a thumping 427, and the attitude to match. We can only hope.
