Camaro history was made this past Saturday evening (September 24th), at the Barrett Jackson Auction in Las Vegas, as the very first 2012 Camaro ZL1 that GM has made available to the public was sold. According to GM’s Media website, the ZL1 was won by Rick Hendrick, owner of the famed Hendrick Motorsports NASCAR racing team, with a high bid of a cool $250,000. That almost seems like a bargain, considering that this car is quite literally a piece of GM and Camaro history in the making.
This ZL1 will be the only coupe for 2012 produced in Carbon Flash Metallic, and it is the 69th ZL1 produced at the Oshawa Assembly plant. Since there were just 69 of the original ZL1’s produced in 1969, this car will be a symbolic “passing of the torch” from the past to the future. The ZL1 is being offered through Fairway Chevrolet in Las Vegas, Nevada, and all of the proceeds from the car’s auction will be generously donated to the YMCA of Southern Nevada, to help the organization serve those who need it the most.
Russ Clark, marketing director for Chevrolet performance cars said, “Like the original, the 2012 Camaro ZL1 introduces a performance benchmark for the street and the track. Offering the 69th Camaro ZL1 at auction was a fitting tribute to the 1969 model, and a great way to benefit such a worthy cause as the YMCA.”
