Extreme Cleaning: Step-by-Step Walkthrough on Detailing a C6

IMG_3278The Corvette was meant to be more than just a V8-powered winner at the track–it was also meant to impress the everyman, no matter where it was found. The problem is, it takes a lot to keep these elegant machines clean, but when done right, the results are well worth it.

Cooperider cleans up the seats; the console and dashboard look fantastic after a thorough dusting.

Here to demonstrate this point is Todd Cooperider of Esoteric Auto Detail, a professional detailing service in Columbus, Ohio. His subject for the day was a 2008 Corvette Z06; definitely the kind of vehicle one handles with extreme care and finesse, yet Cooperider makes it look easy to take the Vette’s scratches, swirls, and other marks and turn them into glossy, flawless awesomeness.

Starting with the interior, Cooperider busted out his reserve of Optimum Protectant Plus, which brought everything to an appropriate level of cleanliness without being overly shiny. The seats received a heavy dose of Leatherique Prestine Clean, a cleaner that reinvigorates leather with light conditioners and leaves a matte finish when wiped up properly.

The exterior was first treated with a foam bath using Chemical Guys Citrus Wash & Clear to wash off old waxes and sealants, then clayed with Chemical Guys clay and Dodo Juice Born Slippy lube. Cooperider discovered to his dismay that the surface contained bits of filling glaze that were likely left over from the dealership’s shoddy work, but he had the tools and the know-how to deal with the problem.

The finished product, inside and outside of the garage.

A rotary buffer and Menzerna 106FA polish were the next step in the detailing process. They effectively eliminated the swirls and holograms that plagued much of the body from front to back, and left a pure, fresh look instead. Cooperider went back over everything with Menzerna Micro Polish SF 4500, and finished it off with Opti-Seal and car wax. The car, now complete, has achieved aesthetic perfection.
