Though the mainstream media is late to the party (as usual), at least they brought a nice hostess gift: confirmation that the Z/28 is on the way for 2012. Per the Detroit Free Press, “Chevrolet will revive its high-performance Camaro Z28 as a 2012 model, giving it a supercharged version of the current Camaro SS’ V8 engine with between 500 and 600 horsepower, two people familiar with the plans said.”
Of course, we’ve been seeing “spy” shots of the Z/28 road testing here in the US and lapping the Nurburgring in Germany all summer long, but the official party line, repeated by the DFP, is “GM spokesman Pat Morrissey said the company does not comment on future vehicle plans.” We’re still expecting the official announcement in January at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.
The real meat of the DFP story is buried eight paragraphs deep – namely, that through November, GM has sold 71,521 Camaros, up 51.4%, while Ford has only moved 64,171 Mustangs in the same time period. Don’t claim victory just yet though, Camaro fans; remember that many would-be Mustang buyers were waiting for the new 5.0 to drop, and as it becomes widely available Ford may take the sales lead.
