It’s hard to even know where to begin with this one… 57 year old Steven Wayne Luebke, the general manager of Deery Brothers Chevrolet in the Pleasant Hill suburb of Des Moines, Iowa, has a previous history of convictions for misdeeds related to alcohol and cars. Per the Des Moines Register, this past weekend he extended his winning streak by making off with a 2010 Camaro from the dealership on Saturday afternoon, speeding down the I-235 and weaving through traffic, and managing to catch the underside of the car on fire before crashing into the median.
Witnesses say that a passing car stopped and picked up Luebke at the scene while the car was burning merrily, with smoke from the fire causing another accident in the opposite lanes of traffic. Here’s where things get weird(er)… Seven or so hours after that crash, Luebke was arrested in a totally separate incident and charged with driving while intoxicated, among other things, then released on bond Sunday morning.
Police investigating the previous day’s Camaro crash started putting things together when they found that the person who picked Luebke up had dropped him off at the same address as that of the general manager of the dealership the car had been taken from. When they arrived there to question him on Sunday evening, a neighbor said Luebke had recently returned home so intoxicated that he had to be helped inside his apartment.
After getting permission to perform a welfare check, officers found him passed out inside, and took him into custody on charges related to the Camaro crash. He’s currently being held without bond in the Polk County Jail.
