In the world of supercars, one of the most iconic is the McLaren F1. Unfortunately for most of us, we won’t ever get the chance to see one of the 106 F1’s built, let alone be able to own one since they typically trade hands just below the $2 million mark. However, thanks to companies like DDR Motorsport, owning a McLaren-esque supercar is made easier. There is just one problem – the supercar shell just released by DDR Motorsport can be configured to fit to two different import, four-banger engines. Thanks to AutoBlog for bringing us the news.
Supercars are more than just fantastic body lines and aerodynamics. They are about power, handling and performance. However, with DDR Motorsports’ new Miami GT kit, the supercar body can be mated to an Acura RSX or Toyota MR2 engine. Does anyone else see something wrong with this? Thankfully, the Miami GT body can also be set up to run with a Corvette LS engine, and we’re wondering how anyone would choose the lesser powerplant options.
The new Miami GT kit comes with a full tube chassis, fiberglass shell (not painted), glass, lights and signals – everything you need other than the prime mover for $20,000. It is up to you to have your drivetrain of choice installed in order to make the Miami GT into a streetable car.
The idea behind the Miami GT kit is to have an affordable supercar on the market, according to DDR Motorsports. However, it’s hard to call even the most exotic body “stuffed” with a wheezy four-cylinder engine a supercar. While it’s true that both the Acura and Toyota powerplants can be built and blown to respectable horsepower levels, any weight savings compared to an aluminum LS quickly disappear, and there’s certainly no price advantage.
Our prediction is that the majority of Miami GT kits will be built out with LS power – after all, if you’re going to spend the money and do the work, you don’t want people to look under the engine cover and say, “You could have had a V8!”
