Corvette Racing Regains GTLM Points Lead With Podium Finish

This weekend the TUDOR United SportsCar Championship made its way to our northern neighbor, Canada, for the Mobil 1 SportsCar Grand Prix at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park. There were plenty of podium finishes to go around for the bowtie-wearing motorsports team in both the GTLM and Daytona Prototype classes, and it should come as no surprise for die-hard fans of Corvette Racing.

That’s because Corvette Racing has won 11 victories at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park in the past 15 years, an unparalleled 73.3-percent win rate. Because of TUDOR USCC rules though, Corvette Racing’s C7.Rs were forced to start from the back of the pack because the team opted to fire the cars with all new Michelin rubber ahead of the race. Thus Jan Magnussen and co-driver Antonio Garcia were forced to start the race from the 7th place position, while teammates Oliver Gavin and and Tommy Milner began the race way back in 8th.

But nobody knows that track better than the crew of Corvette Racing, and by the end of the race Magnussen and Garcia had maneuvered their way from seventh place to third, taking advantage of a small mistake by the No. 25 BMW to take an important pole position. This third-place finish broke a points deadlock between Corvette Racing and BMW, giving the Americans a every slight (two points to be exact) edge over ze Germans. Gavin and Milner managed to finish in fifth place, a three-spot improvement over their start, but not enough to make an impact on the points standings, leaving them at the back of the pack.

Things turned out quite a bit better for those teams racing the dominant Corvette Daytona Prototype, with the #10 Wayne Taylor Racing Corvette DP taking first place, followed by #31 of Action Express Racing. However it’s the VisitFlorida.com Corvette DP that finds itself in first place (again) of the prototype class, despite a fourth-place finish.

Corvette Racing and Daytona Prototypes return to the track for the Continental Tire Road Race Showcase from Road America on Sunday, Aug. 9.
