The key to any successful operation is a good plan. One cannot simply rely on instincts or good fortune to get them out of a sticky situation, but apparently this would-be assassin felt his luck would hold out, especially since he was wheeling about in a classy C6.
Well, truth be told, it was a rental that the suspect, Luke Andrew Lapinski, took out for the expressed motive of causing trouble and making a quick getaway in. Here’s what we know about the case.
Lapinski, who is actually a resident of Buellton, California, is a known person in the town of Butte, Montana. To quote the latter town’s undersheriff, George Skuletich: “He’s not new to us.” So it seems fair to say that Lapinski has had a few run-ins with Johnny Law.
The crime in question relates to Lapinski’s shooting of an as-yet-unidentified 38-year-old male, which occurred on the night of August 1st. Lapinski was reportedly sitting in the driver’s seat of the Corvette, parked on the street, and fired two bullets at his target, one of which struck the man in his calf.
Lapinski accordingly fled the scene and made his way to Bozeman, some 85 miles east of Butte. Authorities were able to track him down thanks to his cell phone, which Lapinski neglected to get rid of after his botched assassination. He surrendered without incident once the police cornered him.
So the perp was arrested and carted off, which is all well and good; but what about the victim? It’s good news for him too, as he apparently made his way to the hospital on his own (ouch!) and was treated and released over the weekend.
Moral of the story seems to be that Corvettes are not the end-all-be-all to your criminal endeavors, and certainly won’t help you evade the police. It also couldn’t hurt to be a little bit smarter about things and just not go around plugging .45 caliber rounds into people’s legs.
