Car enthusiasts have a very back-and-forth relationship with police officers. On one hand, every good American relies on the police to provide security in our communities, to protect us from ne’er-do-wells and criminals who would rob us blind if we let them. On the other hand, car guys often find themselves on the wrong end of the law when it comes to exhibitionist driving infractions like hooning, and speeding.
Some car guys might try to get away when the boys in blue show up, but we know better, especially if you’re in the suburban Chicago area. That is where the Daily Herald reports that local police are turning a donated Chevy Camaro into a sleek new cop car. Bad guys beware!
Ray Chevrolet of Round Lake Beach, Illinois, a Chicago suburb, donated the Camaro to the local police department as part of a community outreach program. The goal is to bridge the gap between police and the public, and high-profile vehicles like this go a long way towards that goal. This isn’t the first performance car Ray Chevrolet has donated to the police department though. In the past they’ve also donated a Chevy Impala SS, a Monte Carlo SS, and a Chevy Trailblazer, all in an effort to give the cops the best rides for their patrol route.
The Camaro won’t see much patrol work though, as it will mostly be reserved for parade and event duty. That said, we wouldn’t be surprised if down the road, this Camaro gets some hidden light bars and gets set up for highway patrol duty. Would-be speeds, you’ve been warned – that Camaro you’re revving at might just be a police officer on patrol. You better think twice before you chirp those tires.
