American muscle cars have a bad rap as poor-handling vehicles, but even back in the day ballsy drivers threw these cars around winding, twisty tracks with nary a second though. These days, muscle car drivers are pampered by all the modern technology that makes cars like the Camaro out-handle and outperform the best Europe has to offer.
So it really shouldn’t surprise our readers that not one, but two Camaros (both rolling on Forgeline wheels) took the top spot at this weekend’s Grand Am Rolex Series race at Virginia International Raceway, reports Grand Am Racing.
Taking home the top spot was the #88 Camaro GT.R by Autohaus, driven by Bill Lester and Jordan Taylor (pictured above), which had finished in 7th place at last month’s race. This first-place finish rockets them towards the top of the pack for the championship and puts them in a strong position for the next race. They managed to beat the #07 Cool TV Camaro of Gunter Schaldach and Corvette Racing alum Oliver Gavin by a scant .270 seconds. They both managed to beat the field of Bimmers, Mazdas, and Mustangs, showing that the Camaros have the gusto and wherewithal to compete with the best in the world.
These 1-2 finish for these two separate Camaro teams has put them right at the front of the pack, with Gunter and Gavin sitting in second overall total points behind the #94 BMW M3. Sitting in third for overall points are Lester and Taylor, meaning both Camaro teams are in prime position to pounce on first place at any point in these series. However, there are plenty of races left, so don’t get too comfortable, guys.
