Britain’s Ginetta G57 Prototype Packs LS3 Power For Racing

The LS-series of engines is the rightful heir to the Chevy 350 V8, and like the 350 production and sales of LS engines carry on, even as GM moves to the newer LT series of engines. The LS isn’t just popular here in the U.S. either, as the global market has been turned on to the 21st century small-block, with boutique automakers harnessing its power for both street legal and track-only models.

Ginetta-G57-3British motorsports engineering firm Ginetta has unveiled its latest prototype racer for endurance racing, the G57. If you haven’t already guessed by now, it’s powered by a mid-mounted LS3 engine, the same enigne that powered the fifth-generation of Chevy Camaros into the new millennium. There’s more to the Ginetta than just its familiar engine though.

Sitting on a carbon fiber monocoque chassis and surrounding the driver with a carbon fiber crashbox and FIA-approved steel roll cage, the Ginetta G57 puts power to the rear wheels through a six-speed Xtrac sequential transmission. It currently wears an “unrestricted” aerodynamic body package that can be easily swapped for entry into any of a number of endurance racing events. Ginetta is hoping to build a (relatively) cheap professional race car to increase its global sales, as the boutique automaker currently sells just half of its race cars outside of Britain. No word on horsepower rating, but the stock LS3 will almost certainly be massaged to make much more than standard Camaro trim.

The Ginetta G57 is slated to debut on January 14th at the 2016 Autosport International event in the UK, where it will be joined by the street-legal G40 Club Car. A distant cousin to the G57, the lightweight G40 comes in at less than 1,800 pounds but still offers a healthy 165 horsepower to play with in peak form. If Ginetta really wants to expand its global sales, they should just stuff the 400 horsepower LS3 into the G40 instead.
