The Chinese might call 2014 the Year of the Horse, but we like to think of it more as Year of the Corvette. The praise, honor, and adoration for the C7 has been earth-shattering, and it helps that the car itself is no slouch in almost any regard. Autoweek, Regular Car Reviews, and Car and Driver have one and all expressed their love for the supercar, and now comes some news we weren’t expecting.
The MECOTY Awards, recently held at the Meydan Beach Club in Dubai, is an event that gathers some of the most well-known publications and editorial heads to come pick the winners of each vehicle segment on the market. The Audi RS7, Mercedes-Benz S-Class, Bentley Continental GT, and many more were up for review, and categories ranging from Best Small Sedan to Best Grand Tourer were decided upon.
The 2014 Corvette Stingray was sorted into the Best Performance Coupe category, and was pitted against the Dodge SRT Viper. Across a panel of 14 jurors, each member of the five publications–Arab Motors, Carbon Octane, CarOnWeb, YallaMotor, and Arab-Wheels–was asked to go through a transparent yet stringent process of voting, including coordination with every selected automaker to ensure a test drive was conducted before the picks were tallied.
The scorecards were then given to MECOTY to compile and announce the winner. The C7 won out, citing better scores on design, handling, emotional appeal, comfort, and, of course, performance. Here’s to hoping the C7 can continue its winning streak in 2015, which should be no problem now that the supercharged Z06 is well on its way to stardom.
