Much of the world has moved on from big-displacement, gas-guzzling V8 engines, finding similar performance from smaller engines thanks to forced induction. But there’s one thing a four or even six-cylinder engine never replicate, and that’s the V8 rumble. Better yet, on the 2016 Camaro GM is offering an enhanced version of the Camaro ZL1’s dual-mode exhaust system, which we can hear in action thanks to the above video.
GM dug into its own parts bin for the dual-mode exhaust, which was first applied to the Corvette C6 and Camaro ZL1. The new enhanced formula features electronically-controlled valves that can actually bypass the muffler when the driver stomps the go pedal. Without the muffler in the way, the Camaro SS takes on a race car tone while freeing up a few extra ponies in the process. There’s also driver-selectable modes, including “track” and “stealth”.
We can’t be 100 percent positive here, but we bet what we’re hearing in this all-too-brief revving clip is the unrestricted “track” mode, bypassing the muffler baffles and heading straight out the exhaust pipe for that unreplicatable V8 roar. We’re not sure how GM slipped this system past the EPA, but we’re glad they did, as it adds even more reason to love the 2016 Camaro.
GM has yet to open up ordering on the all-new Camaro, though word has it dealers will start taking deposits next month. After hearing that rumble ring through our speakers, it’s clear that GM isn’t messing around with its mainstream muscle car anymore. The gloves are off, the muffler is bypassed, and the 2016 Camaro is out to prove that there’s still nothing in the world like an big, bad, American V8.
