GM has refreshed and revised the entire Cadillac lineup in the past year. It all got started with the Cadillac XTS, a front-drive placeholder for the next flagship Cadillac. Then came the more-exciting Cadillac ATS with its track-focused design, followed by the next-gen Cadillac CTS with a new twin-turbo V6 engine.
Well things have come full circle, and the Cadillac XTS will also be getting the 3.5 liter twin-turbo V6 engine as an optional motor. The LF3 engine will make 410 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque in the Cadillac XTS, giving the big Caddy some extra oomph.
The LF3 V6 is made its debut in the 2014 Cadillac CTS at the New York Auto Show, where it makes 420 horsepower and 430 pound-feet of torque. So the XTS gets a slightly less-powerful engine, but it’s a big bump from the stock 3.0 V6 engine, which offers just 304 horsepower and 264 pound-feet of torque. That should make the front-drive-or-all-wheel drive XTS feel quite a bit faster.
Both the base engine and the twin-turbo V6 models will come with steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters, increasing the performance aspirations of the XTS. While we applaud the effort, the XTS still feels like a placeholder for a true flagship Cadillac. At the very least, GM is showing some more common sense when it comes to powering their big luxury barges. 264 pound feet of torque just isn’t enough for the two-ton XTS.
