So it doesn’t surprise us that the 2012 Chevy Camaro just became the first car to ace the National Highway and Traffic Safety Institute’s revised 2011 standards
The NHTSA’s safety standards have barely been touched since the organization was founded 30 years ago. The NHTSA has added new tests, like roll over and roof-strength ratings, but just a few years ago just about every car was getting either four of five stars in crash test ratings. Which is great news, but it also means that the bar needs to be set higher, so that cars continue to get safer.
The 2012 Chevy Camaro is the first car to get a five-star crash test rating in each of the NHTSA’s six catagories; front and side impact, head-on collision, rollover accidents, and other categories. It is the first car to score a perfect rating under the new testing system, which goes to show that today’s muscle cars are much more refined vehicles than their ancestors.
