Pro Mod racer Jeff Dickey came in to this race with the fastest Procharged car in the country. In the final round of qualifying Jarod Wenrick broke that record. Dickey’s team was having trouble running their normal times during qualifying. When eliminations came that all went out the window! Wenrick set the record with a 6.29 in the last qualifying session. Dickey came out and ran a 6.27, 6.30, 6.33 and the record setting 6.25 in the finals to take the $35,000 and the Pro Mod title from WSC 1.
Things were not looking good for Tim Lynch even though he was sitting in the number one qualifying spot. The last round on Saturday Lynch broke a transmission. The very next pass on Sunday they broke another transmission. They were fortunate to have a bye in the first round when the trans broke. The slowest Tim would run the rest of the day would be a 6.70. He ran as quick as 6.62 @ 224 and on a separate pass he went 227 mph.
Grant McCreary appeared to have something for Lynch. Grant ran a 6.71 in the first round and a 6.69 in the second. The bad news was he had to run the Lynch Mob in the semi-finals. Lynch stepped up to a 6.67 @ 227 and Grant slowed to a 6.83.
John Urist runs in the Street Outlaw class and he sponsors Jarrett Halfacre who also runs in the Street Outlaw class. Urist took the number one qualifier position from Halfacre in the last round of qualifying by .01 of a second. Both guys ran 7.4’s all day to run through the field and they meet in the finals where Urist beat Halfacre with a 7.40 to a 7.43 for the $10,000 prize.
Joey Bridge showed up with a car with very few runs on it and it had never had the 94 mm turbo or the 275 Mickey Thompson tires on it. He had hoped to test on Thursday and Friday. The rain canceled the Thursday part of his plan and the converter canceled the Friday test part. The Bridge Racing team changed the converter after the second round of qualifying and had to take the transmission out after the last round. They had someone bring another converter and transmission parts from Memphis. The parts were not what they wanted but they were good enough. They ran in the 7.8’s all through eliminations to win the Drag Radial class.
Jason Lee had good numbers in testing with the F-2 Procharger and the Mickey Thompson drag radials. Jason even made a great hit in the first qualifier with a 7.72 at 174, which was good enough for the top qualifying spot. But Jason had trouble getting down the track until the semi-final round bye run. Jason ran a 7.82, which is the fastest pass in eliminations. In the finals he left the line hard, but the car pushed towards the centerline. He was not able to pull the car back and the car hit the timing cone at 330 feet.
NMCA Extreme Street racer Bob Curran showed up a little late on Saturday and only got one good qualifying hit. The qualifying pass and all his others during eliminations except for his bye run were in the 8.3 range. Bob was able to beat Frank Varela from New Mexico in the final.
The day was shaping up to be a great day of racing. Things were moving smoothly until the finals were ready to be run. That is when out electrical gremlin from Saturday reared its ugly head again. It took just over ninety minutes to get the problem fixed this time.
The PowerTV staff seemed to have an adventure finding a meal after getting done at the race track after 9:00 pm each night. Burger King lobby was closed so a certain driver whipped into the drive thru. This is a night the two kids standing in the drive thru will not soon forget because they almost got run over. Sorry we do not have any pictures of this event to protect the guilty.
One of the most amazing happenings of the day for the PowerTV staff happened in the parking garage of where we were staying. After almost seeing two kids flying into the windshield of the rental car, we were parking. We noticed a security guard/police officer riding around on a bike. He stopped to let a car back out so we could park. For some reason he had his helmet hanging on the handle bars of his bike. As he started to pedal off his knee got caught on his helmet. This threw him off balance and he fell. His head hit the concrete and he when home with a concussion. We just could not bring ourselves to take photos of the guy while he was down.
