LSX Shootout 2008 - Friday Coverage
It is the first full day of racing here in Memphis for the 2008 LSX Shootout. It is hot and sticky today, but the sun is shining. There has been a few cars running down the track, but a lot of the drag radial guys are fighting 60 foot traction issues.

Tom Kempf made a move to the left before straightening out and running the car back down the track for a mid 8 second pass

Paul Major has Arrived

Paul Major has arrived with his twin turbo Drag Radial Corvette. The rear turbos had to be swapped to smaller 76 MM turbos. Paul's combination is the popular 427 inch LSX block. The corvette is on complete F Body suspension with torque arm. He is also sporting a Ford 9" rear end.

When he went out for his first pass, the Corvette went out about 80 feet and had a large amount of white smoking rolling out the back of the car. He stopped briefly and then continued driving down the track, spreading oil further down the track.

A Show and Race Car

Mark Koehler is here with his show car quality Firebird. The engine combination is relatively simple. The engine is a 364 cubic inch LS2 block that is still on the hydraulic roller and off the shelf Trick Flow heads. Induction comes from a single 101 MM turbo. He will plan to run a better built motor in the future. He has ran a personal best of a 8.06 @ 175 MPH, though today he has ran a 8.27 at the same MPH.

Steve Turley is here with his '98 Camaro. Steve is running a 408 cubic inch ERL block with a 106 MM turbo. Steve has run a 7.71 for a personal best, but is hoping for better. He did manage a 7.94 @ 184.12 on one of the passes we witnessed.

Kempf just made another hit down the track, this one nice a straight. He managed to pick up a 7.79 @ 187.18 MPH.

Superbowl True Street winner Mike Brown is back with his blue Firebird. This car is a fully capable street car. He sports a 106 MM turbo that supports a 402 cubic inch ERL block. This is a stock suspension car with all BMR components. He ran an 8.20 yesterday, though he has ran in the high sevens. He will be competing in the drag radial class along with the True Street competition where he will have to take the car on a 30 mile cruise.

Now this is a car I remember from Hot Rod Drag Week 2007. He did not end up making it all the way, due to braking a rear end. This Corvette is owned and driven by John Rese. He now has a Z06 C6 rear end and cross member and has not had any problems on his combination. The motor is a C5R LS7 engine with a Procharger making 18 pounds of boost. He has ran a 9.44 @ 138 MPH and makes about 800 horsepower on the dyno. John will be running in the 9.50 index this weekend.

Wheelies of Q1

Trevor Doelling had a good wheelie during qualifying round one. He rode the car out pretty good so their was no damage. Trevor is hoping to drop into the 9 second range, but currently runs in the 10.00 index. Their fuel cell does not have a fill tube and the tank must be dropped for fuel to be added
