A few months back a crew of six of us covered the NMRA/NMCA Superbowl in Joliet Michigan. One of our rental cars just happened to be a G8 GT. I had seen a few on the road, but this was my first time up close look at it. I really liked what this car had to offer. It was quick for it's size and handled fairly decent. I even managed to get it sideways leaving a gas station while heading to the track, in which the feedback (considering weight) was impressive for a stock suspension vehicle. During the deemed illegal maneuver, a highway patrol vehicle passed and did not pull me over. I guess that since the ground was wet from the morning rain, the officer assumed it was a corrective measure and not an intentional.
Surprisingly enough, with good looks and performance, the G8s just aren't selling. The
Wall Street Journal reported total August sales for the G8 was 1,915 units, that is not even one G8 per 2,712 U.S. Pontiac dealerships. Rising gas prices on a vehicle that does not get very good gas mileage, coupled with a nearly $30,00 price tag maybe the reason why GM is seeing slow G8 sales. Keep a look out for the local newspaper as you might see some sale incentives on the G8s in the near future.
