C7 Corvette delayed and denied mid-engine layout
The C6 Corvette is now entering its fourth year of production, and as one might expect GM is hard at work designing the next generation Corvette which faces tighter CAFE standards. That means even though the 500 horsepower Z06 gets 25 miles per gallon on the highway, GM is still looking for ways to improve fuel efficiency.

That had Bob Lutz backing a proposal which would make the next generation Corvette a mid engine layout. The theory being a mid-engine layout would be easier to improve gas mileage on and would make cylinder deactivation technology more effective. The idea has been sunk, and the next generation 'Vette has now been delayed until 2014, two years later than expected. The next generation of muscle cars again face crippling gas prices but hopefully they will all survive in better shape than last time. I shudder at the thought of a V6 'Vette...

Check out Motor Trend for more on the C7 'Vette.
