PRI 2015: JE Pistons Explains Its Pro Seal MLS Head Gasket Process

jep1You know JE Pistons from a racing standpoint, and its name is synonymous with performance. From high-quality pistons to high-performance piston rings, JE is no stranger to the winner’s circle.

JE Pro Seal brought out its MLS head gaskets to the PRI show this year. The new gaskets begin with AISI 304 stainless steel, and each layer is individually laser cut and formed to optimize performance and quality.

JE Pistons’ Sean Crawford had this to say about the multi-layer steel head gaskets, “Because we start out with raw stainless steel, we can do our embossment process right away, which is done as a multi-stop forging that slowly forms the embossment shapes.”

We follow that with a tempering process, and that heat treatment helps the gasket to maintain its shape so it won’t try to flatten back to its original state. -Sean Crawford, JE Pistons

“We follow that with a tempering process, and that heat-treatment helps the gasket to maintain its shape so it won’t try to flatten back to its original state. That means the embossment will maintain that surface pressure and its shape for the life of the gasket,” he continued.

Because JE embosses and heat treats each layer individually, each layer can be coated individually and the gaskets are hand assembled. The coating has four layers, with the outside layer being a silicone that helps to seal uneven surfaces. Underneath that is a Viton rubber seal that seals well on rougher surfaces.

This proprietary coating process encapsulates the entire gasket with no exposed material, creating the ultimate seal between the block and the head. This provides superior conformity and corrosion resistance and allows for easier removal, despite exposure to extremely high temperatures.

The folded gas stopper layer in most JE Pro Seal gaskets increase the ability to seal in high-pressure cylinders, making it a great fit for supercharged, turbocharged, and nitrous applications. These one-mil thick Pro Seal MLS head gaskets are available for SBC, BBC, LS, and Ford modular motors, with plans for 1.2-mil thick in the near future. Check with the JE Pistons website for current applications for both domestic and imports.
